CHIROPRACTIC CARE

What to expect on your first visit

When you enter our office, we will ask for your health history and basic information. This intake is followed by a one-on-one consultation with the doctor and a thorough examination. Dr. Bahar will determine whether further testing is required in order to come up with the most accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment for each patient.

What is Chiroparctic Treatment

Most chiropractors treat Subluxations, a condition where one or more spinal vertebrae is out of alignment. This misalignment disrupts the signals your brain sends to your body. The correction to this, called an adjustment helps to restore your nervous system and addresses your neuromuscular pain. By applying a precise and specific force in the right direction and at the right time, chiropractors can change the position and motion of the bones in the spine. Over time this process helps correct abnormal structural and neural patterns, allowing the body to heal itself.

The specific techniques chosen will depend on your age, condition and comfort levels. Adjustments can range from the classic dynamic thrust to very light forces and contacts, along with instrument and table-assisted delivery.

Adjustments are extremely safe, and in the hands of a qualified chiropractor carry
far fewer risks than pain medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, and many common daily activities.

The results of chiropractic care are different for every person since each spine and nervous system is unique. Many people find they have more energy, greater concentration, and higher productivity after getting an adjustment. Additional benefits include sounder sleep and a better immune system, increasing the body’s natural ability to resist disease.

Normal spinal motion is a requirement for normal brain and nervous system function, so improving spinal function has a positive effect on the human being as a whole.

Adjustment
The term "adjustment" refers to the specific realigning motion that chiropractors apply to vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. The objective of the chiropractic treatment is to reduce subluxations. Once subluxations are removed, the spine has an increased range of motion, vertebrae are no longer pinching tender nerves, and the nervous system can function in better harmony with the brain.

The adjustment made by chiropractors consists of a high velocity, short lever arm thrust applied to a vertebra, which is often accompanied by an audible release of gas (joint cavitation). The audible sound is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. This release of the gases relieves pressure that has built up within the joint. The sensation is usually relieving, though sometimes, if the surrounding muscles are in spasm or if the patient tenses up during the adjustment, minor and brief discomfort may be noticed.

There are times when joint cavitation or cracking does not occur and this is often due to either significant muscle splinting or the patient may not be adequately relaxed during the chiropractic procedure. The chiropractor would then allow the patient to rest and relax, apply ice, or do some electrical stimulation and massage prior to attempting spinal manipulation.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

sEMG Scans
sEMG Scans - surface EMG scans - test the microvoltage in the paraspinal musculature while the patient stands in neutral posture. Using this state-of-the-art technology, the chiropractor is able to pinpoint exactly where the spine is under increased stress.

X-Ray / MRI
X-rays may be taken to check for pathologies and/or broken bones. Depending on the findings, the chiropractor may call for an MRI or other imaging study of the back. In addition to Dr. Bahar’s evaluation of the xrays, it is our policy to send all xrays to a certified radiologist for further analysis.

24 Hour Urinalysis
This test is usually performed to gather information about which compounds the body is able and unable to break down. It helps us with determining the chemical stresses afflicting your body.

Hormonal Panel
Completehormonal panel may be suggested to find hormonal imbalances that may be contributing factors to your symptoms.

NUTRITION WORK

Nutrition
Nutrition in America is at an all-time low. Unhealthy foods laden with sugar and fat have swamped the market and refined, processed foods have kicked nutrient-rich foods to the wayside. People over-eat and under-exercise. We live in a polluted environment where even our food suffers: the soil in which our crops grow lacks nutrients, so the crops lack nutrients too! No wonder the percentage of people who develop serious diseases is increasing annually! Diet can’t be the only thing you rely on to obtain long-term health. To achieve optimal health, you need to replace the nutrients that are taken out of the food you are eating and boost your intake of nutrients. Nutritional supplements and enzymes do exactly that.

Some of the nutrition programs we offer are:

•Individualized nutrition plans
• Liver Detoxification
• Whole Food Organic Enzymes

In order to address some of the chemical stresses the body may be under, we use three steps. The first step is to gather all pertinent data using a detailed questionnaire. Secondly, we will run a 24 hour urinalysis test to determine what the body is or isn’t breaking down. The third step involves a fasting palpation examination done in a controlled environment. For this examination, the patient fasts for a period of time, then comes into the office. After the chiropractor checks how the patient is responding to the fast, the patient eats a balanced meal. As the patient absorbs the meal, the chiropractor rechecks the body. Dr. Bahar will then generally prescribe a detoxification followed by a program of enzymes to restore optimal digestion. She will also recommend changes in diet as a supplement to the enzymes. If you or your loved one is interested in improving your digestion and health, call our office for a complimentary consultation.

ADJUSTIVE THERAPIES

Exercises
At Century Chiropractic Center, Dr. Bahar often instructs her patients in stretching and strengthening routines customized for the specific needs of the individual.

Massage
Types of Massages:

Swedish Massage: a smooth, flowing style that promotes general relaxation, improves circulation and and relieves muscular tension.

Aromatherapy Massage: combining the therapeutic properties of essential oils with specific massage techniques to promote health and well-being.

Deep Tissue: focuses on the deeper layer of muscle tissue, often combined with Swedish strokes to create a unified and balanced session. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibers of the muscle, tendon, and fascia designed to release adhesions "knots."

Sports Massage: typically used before, during, and after athletic events. This massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, drain away fatigue, reduce swelling and muscle tension, promote flexibility and prevent injuries.

Active Isolated Stretching: one of the methods of stretching most used by today's athletes. Allows the body to repair itself and also prepare for daily activity. This technique involves the method of holding each stretch for only 2 seconds. This method of stretching is also known to work with the body's natural physiological makeup to improve circulation and increase its elasticity of muscle joints and fascia.

Medical-Orthopedic Massage: specialized approach to therapy aimed at reducing pain, realigning scar tissue and helping recover range of motion. While orthopedic massage therapy is generally used to help heal soft-tissue injuries, many athletes and dancers receive orthopedic massage regularly to enhance performance. This can be combined with Swedish and deep tissue massage.

Trigger Point Therapy: is a modality that focuses on the source of chronic pain or spasm in the muscle of muscle group.

Spinal Traction—Flexion/Distraction Therapy
You don't have to live in debilitating pain. Whether you have lower back pain, a pinched nerve, sciatica, or a variety of symptoms related to damaged or degenerative discs, FD Therapy may be for you.

This gentle, non-surgical therapy can relieve lower back pain and sciatica pain. It is a state-of-the-art therapy for bulging or degenerative disc disease.

The gentle distractive forces of the FD therapy create a decompression of the spine with unloading due to distraction and proper positioning, to improve blood flow and nutrient exchange to the injured area. You'll experience several cycles of stretch and relaxation, which graduates to a peak over a period of several minutes.

Therapy sessions typically last less than 20 minutes, 2 times a week for 1 month, transitioning from passive to active treatments as you respond, with most patients feeling pain relief with as few as 6-10 treatments. Some patients are released from treatment after only 8 weeks.

A complete program targeting the function of the stabilization muscles is a vital part of FD Therapy. Exercise and adjunctive therapies such as heat, muscle stimulation, ultrasound, and cold therapy can assist in rehabilitation of these structures. Our goal is to not only help heal the disc, but to also enhance muscular control and support of the back.

Regular home exercise and periodic visits to our office will help maintain your spinal health and reduce the probability of reoccurrance. Clinical results of this type of therapy have been effective in over 75% of the patients treated and most patients find long-term relief or effective management of their pain when they complete the entire program of treatments utilizing the FD Spinal Therapy.
